Our Story

How it all started...

Every church that is planted has a seed from which it grows.  The seed of Bergheim Christian Fellowship is being cast by Currey Creek Church in Boerne; whose seed was cast by First Baptist Church of Boerne.  At the heart of this story is a commitment to plant churches.  This vision was first shared in our area by Bubba Stahl in 2000 when he implemented the radical idea to plant another church in Boerne.  This generosity and kingdom-mindedness was shared by John Free whom FBC brought in to be their church planter.  That seed has not only taken root and grown, but it has multiplied!

Expanding the vision...

Eric Cate has discerned the call of God on his life to plant and pastor Bergheim Christian Fellowship.  This calling has been confirmed by the leadership of Currey Creek Church and The Bridge Fellowship.  He has been a part of the north San Antonio and Boerne community since 2000, and a member at Currey Creek since 2011.  During his time there, he led the missions activities of the church, served as an elder, taught, and served on staff (2016-2022) in leadership.  Eric holds a bachelor’s degree in Business and International Studies from Abilene Christian University (1994) and a master’s degree in Theological Studies from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (2019), where he has continued with coursework since in the doctoral program.

Eric and Karen married in 1993 and have two grown children, Adi and Dawson.  Karen’s master’s degree in Education (ACU, 2018) with a certificate in conflict management and resolution serve her well in ministry.  She has been a long-time educator and stay-at-home mom.  She and Eric love serving in the local church, hanging out with their family, and hiking in the mountains.

Where we are headed...

Why plant a church in Bergheim?  The answer to that question is best understood by answering another question: “Where is Bergheim?”  Bergheim is an unincorporated area of eastern Kendall County.  It lies approximately halfway between the cities of Boerne and Bulverde along State Highway 46 and is best described as the area surrounding the intersection of FM 3351 and Hwy 46.  The area is quickly developing as the cities of Boerne, Bulverde, and Fair Oaks Ranch grow together.  We believe this is a strategic area to plant a Gospel-believing, Gospel-preaching church that will grow as the community grows.  Boerne ISD recently added a middle school here and has plans to expand with elementary and high school additions in the future.  TXDOT is working on an expansion of FM3351 that will stretch all the way from IH-10 on the south end to Hwy 46 in Bergheim.  Bulverde has expanded with high-density single family residence developments just across the Kendall/Comal county line, just 4 miles from the Bergheim intersection. We’re excited to engage this developing area with the Gospel!
